There are really things that are so insignificant that you would never expect it could change how you think about life. This is exactly how I felt before watching Sheryl WuDunn’s speech. However, exactly a minute and thirty four seconds into her speech, I was totally engrossed in everything she has been saying. I never thought a parent would think that his or her daughter’s education is a waste of money. More shockingly, the cost of that education is just a mere thirteen dollars which is the price of a really cheap t-shirt in my country. I never thought there are places you can enroll in a school with only this much, but then I realized there are, and that in some places, they would even feel wastage if it is spend on a girl’s education. It is just so sad.
In my country, there are poor people, yes; however, the government and some organizations do provide free education to the less fortunate, so it has never been an issue. Also, thirteen dollars can never send someone to school in my country—maybe thirteen hundred can, so when she mentioned a parent wanting to deprive their daughter education because of money, I was shocked and even a bit angry. In my opinion, education is a right and no matter how cheap or expensive it is, people should get it regardless of gender. In the case of discrimination, there may be similarities from my country’s history. Not too long ago, boys are preferred to girls as well because it was believed that boys bring prosperity to the family. However, as time passed by, people’s thinking changed and the treatment between men and women became equal.
Sheryl WuDunn’s solution was to educate girls, so they become productive. She even said that women’s education is one of the best investments in the world. To support it, she mentioned some examples of women who made it big by pursuing a proper education. She also convinced her audience to make a difference by supporting the change. In my opinion, the world will definitely be better when people help each other. It is true that even a few loose change can help make some people’s lives make a hundred eighty degree turn.
Finally, indeed, with great power comes great responsibility. We, who are more fortunate than others, should lend a hand to those who are not. We are lucky that we were born in a country were men or women can get an education, choose a career, and succeed on it. We are lucky that we can eat three or more meals a day. We are lucky that we can choose a school to go to, but not everyone is as lucky as we are. Consequently, we must make some effort to help others, make a better life for other women, and work hard in order to be someone who can initiate change. As a student, I can only do so little; however, I know that the little thing I could do can pile up with the little things other people do to make a big change.
